YEMISI VESE’S STORY

Yemisi Vese

I was 21 when I got pregnant for my boyfriend. I was terrified and worried, but I knew I would keep the child, because I was and still am a Christian.

I was a 300 level student with no idea of what to do. What made it worse, was my mum was a lecturer in my faculty and a minister in church. I had many emotional problems, which lasted for a very long time.

Somehow, I had the strength inside me that I could kepp my child. I also developed a thick skin. I refused to allow anyone to get to me. I didn’t tell my friends I was pregnant as I didn’t want to be convinced to get an abortion. ASUU was on strike at the time, so I was home until I was 6 months pregnant.

By the time I went back to school, the pregnancy was obvious and people made sly comments. A few weeks after my 2nd semester exams, I gave birth. I remember so many times I had no money as a youth corper and had to pay my child’s school fees, but God always made a way for me.

People told me no one would marry me because of my daughter, and some said they’d marry me out of pity, lol. But I didn’t listen. What God wants to do in one’s life, he will do. I met my husband and we’re happily married. My daughter is turning 14 this year and she’s amazing.

Regardless of whatever position you find yourself in, it’s the blessing of the Lord that makes rich and adds no sorrow. I’ve not had any reason to cry over my child. She’s indeed a blessing. When you choose God and you know him, you can live above whatever circumstance you find yourself in.
