DAMIEN OLALUSI’S STORY

Damien

I lost my dad when I was 10 and my mum when I was 15. When I lost my dad, I was forced to move out of the house because of property issues. I grew up by myself as I’m the only child from my mum.

I was brought up in church and had to make the decision to stay and serve God. I started learning how to play the guitar.

At the time, I was working with Coca-Cola and had savings. I had saved up to N8000 in 2009 and used that money to buy a guitar. I went hungry for a month, lol. I started learning day and night; I would watch videos. I also got a book from Frank Edwards. I photocopied it because I couldn’t aford it. I was able to learn more from the book and my guitar skills got better. I also started writing songs too.

In 2010, I was praying and asking God to make a way for me and then I heard something, “Use your talent and your gifts for me.” I was like, that can’t be God. Hey, there’s no money in gospel music. I struggled with it for 2 years but at the end of the day, I just gave up and obeyed.

Today I’m a producer, a songwriter and a creative director at Syscom Tech, where I produce adverts.
